Improving the Labor and Delivery Patient Experience: Communication Before and After

October 22, 2026

It usually starts with information is scattered.

Labor and delivery is one of the most memorable experiences patients have with a hospital, and it often shapes whether a family returns for other care. Much of how patients judge the experience comes down to communication: what they knew before arriving, how informed they felt during their stay and how well follow-up was handled after they went home.

The friction

A few things make it stickier than it looks:

  • Information is scattered. Pre-registration, tours, classes and what-to-bring guidance may come from different departments.
  • Expectations vary widely. First-time parents and experienced parents need different levels of guidance.
  • Discharge is rushed and overwhelming. Patients receive a lot of information at a tired, busy moment.
  • Follow-up crosses departments. Postpartum visits, lactation support and newborn care may be owned by different teams.

The quiet bill

What it costs to keep muddling through is the capacity you never recover.

When communication is fragmented, patients arrive less prepared, call with avoidable questions, and leave unsure about next steps. Follow-up visits are missed, patient experience scores may suffer, and families may choose a different hospital for their next birth or for other services.

Practical fixes

Common moves that actually help:

Map the patient journey. List every touchpoint from first prenatal visit to postpartum follow-up and who owns each.

Send a pre-admission sequence. Pre-registration, what to bring, parking and visitor policies, in short messages ahead of the due date.

Simplify discharge. Give a one-page summary and send key points by message afterward.

Schedule follow-up before discharge. Book postpartum and lactation visits before the patient leaves.

Use patient engagement platforms. Many hospitals use messaging and reminder tools to automate these sequences, with staff review.

Pick the one leak that costs you the most this month. Fix that before you rebuild the whole system.
